    Battle Ground garden takes root

Battle Ground -- On May 2, local businesses, charitable and educational organizations and Battle Ground city officials gathered behind Battle Ground Cinema to break ground for the planned Battle Ground Community Gardens. The plan calls for 35 plots of varying sizes that will be available to the public and local groups; four of the smaller beds are designed for access for the disabled. An on-site storage shed, water availability, a pergola and nighttime lighting are also planned. Local master gardeners will lead seminars on raised-bed gardening, and there will be some limited scholarships available for those not able to afford the rental fee. Each gardener will be required to donate one row of vegetables to the North County Community Food Bank. School districts get new bus firm

Battle Ground and Hockinson -- Petermann Northwest, which has been the Battle Ground School District’s bus service provider since 2008, was purchased earlier this school year by Durham School Services of Warrenville, Ill., a division of National Express Corp. But state and federal authorities have required Petermann/Durham to divest two of its Washington state contracts in the name of competition in the school-transportation field. So Battle Ground and Hockinson schools will be served by Student Transportation of America (<a href=\"http://www.ridestbus.com/)\">http://www.ridestbus.com/)</a> through June 2014, at which point the district can extend the contract for two one-year periods before putting it out to bid again. School officials said they’ve heard glowing things about STA from other school districts, and STA regional vice president Donald Kissell told the school districts he intends to retain the spirit and staff of Petermann, which has been an integral part of the community.

    B.G.: 162 homeless students counted

Battle Ground -- There were 162 “known homeless students” attending Battle Ground schools as of April 13. That’s according to Lydia Sanders, the district’s liaison to homeless students, as reported in the latest school district newsletter. The number of homeless students is steeply higher than previous annual counts: There were 146 in April 2011, 142 in 2010, 115 in 2009 and 58 in 2008. For these purposes, “homeless” is defined as lacking fixed, regular, adequate night residence. It includes those who are camping or “couch surfing,” that is, doubling up with relatives or friends.
